Overview

The systemic immune and hematopoietic system is a complex network of organs, tissues, and cells that work together to protect the body from pathogens and maintain the production of blood cells (StatPearls, NBK459319). It includes the bone marrow, thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes, as well as circulating cells such as lymphocytes, neutrophils, and erythrocytes (NIH, Hematopoietic System). This system is responsible for both innate and adaptive immunity, as well as the continuous replenishment of all blood cell types through hematopoiesis (StatPearls, NBK539801). While it is not a single molecular target, it is the primary site of action for numerous therapeutic classes, including immunosuppressants, immunostimulants, and chemotherapy. Dysregulation within this system can lead to a wide range of disorders, including hematologic malignancies, primary immunodeficiencies, and systemic autoimmune conditions. Therapeutic strategies often focus on specific molecular components within this system, such as cytokines or cell-surface receptors, to modulate immune activity or restore normal blood cell production. Monitoring the health of this system is critical in clinical practice, often involving the assessment of blood counts and inflammatory markers. Safety concerns when modulating this system include the risk of severe infection or bone marrow failure.
