In oncology, the tumor microenvironment (TME) specifically influences tumor growth, metastasis, and response to therapy through interactions between malignant cells and surrounding stroma or infiltrating immune cells (Pitt et al., 2016, Immunity). Therapeutic strategies often aim to modulate this environment—for example, by reprogramming immunosuppressive cells or neutralizing inhibitory cytokines—to restore effective anti-tumor immunity (Chen & Mellman, 2017, Nature). Understanding the crosstalk between local tissue environments and systemic immune status is critical for the development of precision immunotherapies and predicting patient response to treatment (Spitzer et al., 2017, Cell).
