Target intelligence / Profile preview
Systemic magnesium-dependent physiological processes refer to the vast array of biochemical and physiological functions regulated by the magnesium ion (Mg2+), which serves as an essential cofactor for more than 300 enzymatic systems (StatPearls, 2023). These processes are fundamental to cellular energy production, specifically through the stabilization of ATP, as well as the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and proteins (NIH, 2022). At a systemic level, magnesium is crucial for maintaining normal muscle and nerve function, regulating blood glucose levels, and supporting blood pressure control (Gröber et al., 2015). It also plays a structural role in bone development and facilitates the active transport of calcium and potassium ions across cell membranes, which is vital for nerve impulse conduction and cardiac rhythm (PubMed, 2021). Clinical management of these processes typically involves the use of magnesium salts to treat deficiencies or specific conditions like preeclampsia, though excessive levels can lead to toxicity and respiratory depression (StatPearls, 2023).
Magnesium acts as a physiological calcium antagonist and a critical cofactor for ATP-dependent enzymes, including kinases and ATPases (Fiorentini et al., 2021). It stabilizes the structure of DNA and RNA and modulates the activity of ion channels such as the NMDA receptor and various potassium and calcium channels (Al Alawi et al., 2018).
