Overview

Systemic oxygen transport and hemodynamics represent the integrated physiological processes responsible for delivering oxygen from the lungs to peripheral tissues to meet metabolic demands. Oxygen delivery (DO2) is mathematically defined as the product of cardiac output and the arterial oxygen content, the latter of which is primarily determined by hemoglobin concentration and oxygen saturation (StatPearls, 2023). Hemodynamics refers to the physical forces governing blood flow, including the relationship between blood pressure, vascular resistance, and flow volume (NIH, 2022). This system is not a single molecular target but rather a complex physiological network regulated by the autonomic nervous system, endocrine signals, and local metabolic factors. In clinical conditions such as circulatory shock or heart failure, these processes are severely impaired, leading to inadequate tissue perfusion and potential organ failure (PubMed, 2021). Pharmacological management involves using various agents, such as vasopressors and inotropes, to modulate specific molecular targets like adrenergic receptors to restore hemodynamic stability and optimize oxygen transport.
