Target intelligence / Profile preview
The systemic plasma protein milieu refers to the complex and dynamic collection of proteins, cytokines, and signaling molecules circulating in the blood. This proteome acts as a functional snapshot of an organism's health, facilitating communication between distant organs and maintaining physiological homeostasis (Nature Medicine, 2019). In the context of aging research, the milieu has gained prominence due to studies showing that young plasma can rejuvenate aged tissues, while old plasma can induce senescence in young organisms (Nature, 2014). Therapeutic strategies targeting the milieu, such as therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) or neutral blood exchange, aim to dilute accumulated pro-aging factors and inflammatory cytokines to promote systemic repair and reduce the burden of age-related diseases (Aging, 2020). Because it encompasses thousands of distinct proteins, it is considered a system-level environment rather than a discrete molecular target.
Modulation of the systemic environment through the removal of pro-inflammatory or pro-aging factors (e.g., via plasma dilution or exchange) and the potential replenishment of youthful or protective factors to restore tissue homeostasis.
