Overview

T-box transcription factor 20 is a protein encoded by the TBX20 gene located on chromosome 7q14.2. It contains a highly conserved T-box DNA-binding domain and functions as a key regulator of multiple cardiac genes through interaction with other cardiac transcription factors such as NKX2-5 and GATA4. TBX20 coordinates cell proliferation, differentiation, and morphogenesis during embryonic heart development, including the formation of heart chambers and valves. Mutations in TBX20 are strongly associated with a spectrum of congenital heart defects, such as atrial septal defect, and with cardiac dysfunction in adulthood, including dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias. TBX20’s broad influence on cardiac gene networks makes it a focus of research in cardiovascular development, disease pathogenesis, and potentially therapeutic gene modulation.
