Brachyury is a transcription factor encoded by the TBXT gene. It plays a crucial role in mesoderm formation, notochord development, and the establishment of the anterior-posterior body axis during embryogenesis. In adults, it is a key biomarker for chordoma, a rare bone cancer. Brachyury functions by binding to specific DNA sequences and regulating the expression of target genes involved in cell differentiation, cell movement, and tissue organization. It directly activates early/mid-onset genes; indirectly regulates late-onset genes via intermediaries.
As a transcription factor, Brachyury binds to specific DNA sequences in the promoters/enhancers of target genes, thereby regulating their expression. This directly impacts mesoderm formation and notochord development.
