T lymphocytes, or T cells, are a type of white blood cell that play a central role in the adaptive immune system. They originate from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow and mature in the thymus. T cells mediate immune responses by recognizing peptide fragments bound to MHC molecules on antigen-presenting cells. Upon activation, they proliferate and differentiate into various subtypes with specialized functions, including cytotoxic T cells, helper T cells, regulatory T cells, follicular helper T cells, and memory T cells. Dysfunction or deficiency in T cells can lead to immunodeficiency disorders, increased susceptibility to infections, autoimmune diseases, or failure in tumor surveillance.
