T cell antigen recognition via major histocompatibility complex (MHC) presentation is a fundamental process in adaptive immunity. T cells recognize antigens as short peptide fragments that are processed and displayed on the surface of cells bound to MHC molecules. This interaction is mediated by the T cell receptor (TCR), which specifically binds to the peptide-MHC complex, initiating a cascade of signaling events that lead to T cell activation. MHC molecules present peptides derived from intracellular (Class I) or extracellular (Class II) proteins. Co-receptors (CD4/CD8) and co-stimulatory molecules are also crucial for effective T cell activation. This process is vital for detecting pathogen-infected or abnormal self-cells while maintaining tolerance toward healthy tissue. Dysregulation can result in autoimmunity or immunodeficiency.
