Overview

CD80 (B7-1) and CD86 (B7-2) are co-stimulatory molecules expressed on antigen-presenting cells (APCs). They interact with CD28 on T cells to provide a crucial secondary signal for T cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation. These molecules also interact with CTLA4, an inhibitory receptor, to regulate immune responses and maintain tolerance. Targeting CD80/CD86-CD28 interactions is a strategy in cancer immunotherapy and autoimmune disease treatment.

Mechanism of action

CD80 and CD86 bind to CD28 on T cells to provide a co-stimulatory signal, leading to T cell activation, proliferation, and cytokine production. They also bind to CTLA4, an inhibitory receptor, to dampen T cell responses.
