T cell cytokine production

Molecular classification
Cellular function/process
01

Overview

T cell cytokine production refers to the process by which T lymphocytes (T cells) synthesize and secrete cytokines—small signaling proteins that are critical for mediating and regulating immune responses. This function is central to both the initiation and regulation of immune reactions, including inflammation, pathogen clearance, tissue repair, and maintenance of immune tolerance. Upon activation, naive T cells proliferate and differentiate into various effector subsets (Th1, Th2, Th17, iTreg/nTreg). These differentiated subsets produce distinct profiles of cytokines that orchestrate specific types of immune responses. Cytokine gene expression is tightly controlled at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. The polarization toward different helper lineages underlies susceptibility or resistance to various diseases. Cytokine production also shapes memory formation following infection or vaccination.
