Overview

TIM4 (T-cell Immunoglobulin and Mucin Domain Containing 4) is a cell surface receptor primarily known for its role in the immune system as a phosphatidylserine (PS) receptor. It is mainly expressed by antigen-presenting cells (APCs) like macrophages and dendritic cells. TIM4 recognizes PS exposed on apoptotic cell surfaces, mediating their engulfment by phagocytes, which is crucial for tissue homeostasis and preventing autoimmunity. It also modulates adaptive immunity and can be involved in allergic responses and tumor immunity. Ectopic expression has been observed in tumors and blockade is being explored as a therapeutic strategy.
