T cell-mediated cytotoxicity refers to the process by which cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), primarily CD8+ T cells, recognize and kill target cells such as virus-infected, cancerous, or otherwise damaged cells. This is a critical component of the adaptive immune response and is essential for controlling intracellular pathogens and tumor surveillance. Cytotoxic T cells employ two main mechanisms to induce death in target cells: Granule Exocytosis Pathway and Fas-Fas Ligand Pathway. Both pathways ultimately result in apoptosis rather than necrosis, minimizing inflammation and collateral tissue damage.
