Overview

T cell receptor alpha joining 48 (TRAJ48) is a germline gene segment located within the TCR alpha locus on chromosome 14. During T cell development, TRAJ48 can be selected as the J (joining) region in somatic recombination, joining a V (variable) segment and subsequently contributing to the CDR3 antigen-binding region of the T cell receptor alpha chain. This process generates receptor diversity critical for recognizing a broad array of antigens presented by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. TRAJ48 is not expressed as a standalone protein or functional receptor but constitutes an essential building block in the genetic generation of diverse TCRs necessary for adaptive immunity.
