T cell receptor alpha variable 13-2 (TRAV13-2) encodes the variable (V) region of the alpha chain of the T cell receptor (TCR). The TCR is a heterodimeric complex (usually consisting of alpha and beta chains) found on the surface of T lymphocytes, crucial for the adaptive immune response. The variable domains of these chains provide the antigen specificity by recognizing peptide fragments presented on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules by antigen-presenting cells. The V region (such as TRAV13-2) is generated by somatic recombination, enabling the immune system's vast repertoire for antigen detection. While therapeutics do not typically target single V gene segments like TRAV13-2, they are of significant importance in TCR repertoire analysis, T cell engineering, and immune monitoring. The entire TCR, and its associated CD3 complex, are targets for immunomodulation in diseases like cancer and autoimmune conditions.
