Overview

T cell receptor alpha variable 17 (TRAV17) is a variable (V) region segment of the T cell receptor (TCR) alpha chain gene, which encodes the antigen-binding domain of the TCR found on the surface of T lymphocytes[1][3][4]. TRAV17 contributes to the immune system’s capacity to recognize diverse peptide antigens presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules on antigen-presenting cells[1][2][4]. The TCR is essential for the activation of T cells and the adaptive immune response; its engagement leads to intracellular signaling cascades that drive T cell activation, proliferation, and effector functions[1][2]. TRAV17 is one of dozens of such V region segments that combine stochastically with joining (J) and constant (C) regions to create TCR diversity via somatic recombination in the thymus[1][2]. As with other V segments, TRAV17 is not directly a therapeutic target but forms part of the repertoire that enables T cell–mediated antigen recognition and responses[1][3][4].
