Overview

T cell receptor alpha variable 3 (TRAV3) is one of many variable (V) gene segments in the TCR alpha locus. During T cell development in the thymus, TRAV3 and other V segments are recombined with J (joining) gene segments to form the variable region of the T cell receptor alpha chain. This enables the generation of diverse TCRs, each recognizing a specific peptide antigen presented by MHC molecules on antigen-presenting cells. The TRAV3 segment supplies sequence diversity to the TCR repertoire and, together with its paired beta chain, determines antigen specificity and T cell function. While variable gene usage such as TRAV3 is fundamental for adaptive immunity, individual TRAV segments are not themselves considered independent therapeutic targets or disease biomarkers—they constitute modular elements of the TCR receptor on the surface of T lymphocytes[1][2][5][6].
