Overview

T cell receptor alpha variable 35 (TRAV35) is one of many variable region gene segments within the TCR alpha locus. These segments contribute to the diversity of the TCR alpha chain through recombination events in developing T cells, enabling the immune system to recognize a variety of antigens presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. In humans, TRAV35 is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not produce a functional TCR alpha chain variable domain protein. The T cell receptor as a whole is composed of an alpha and beta chain (or less commonly, gamma and delta), and each chain includes a constant and a variable segment; the diversity in the variable segments determines antigen specificity. While the TCR complex as a whole is critical for immune response and a therapeutic interest in immuno-oncology, the TRAV35 gene segment is not itself a therapeutic or biomarker target. It is important to note that TRAV35 refers to a gene segment rather than a druggable protein target or classic receptor, but its nomenclature is considered correct.
