Overview

The T cell receptor beta diversity 2 (TRBD2, TCRBD2, ENSG00000292271) gene segment is one of the D (diversity) regions encoded within the T cell receptor beta (TRB) locus. The TRB locus consists of variable (V), diversity (D), joining (J), and constant (C) gene segments. During T cell development, the TRBD2 segment participates in V(D)J recombination—an enzymatic process which randomly binds one V, one D, and one J segment to generate a highly diverse population of antigen-recognizing beta chain receptors. This diversity is essential for the adaptive immune system’s ability to recognize a vast range of antigens. The functional receptor is a heterodimer of an alpha and a beta chain, assembled and expressed on the T cell surface. The diversity provided by TRBD2 and other similar segments contributes indirectly to immune surveillance, tumor recognition, response to pathogens, and risk of autoimmunity, but TRBD2 alone is not a therapeutic protein target, biomarker, or druggable entity.
