Target intelligence / Profile preview
T cell receptor beta variable 17 (TCR Vβ17), also known as TRBV19 according to IMGT nomenclature, is a member of the diverse family of β-chain variable regions found on αβ-type T cell receptors. These receptors play a central role in adaptive immunity by recognizing peptide antigens presented by major histocompatibility complex molecules on antigen-presenting cells. The diversity within the β-chain variable regions allows for recognition specificity across an immense range of antigens. Approximately 3–7% of peripheral blood CD3+ cells express this particular variant under normal conditions[1]. Notably, certain bacterial superantigens—including Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B—can bind directly to this region regardless of antigen specificity, resulting in widespread polyclonal activation. Clinically, preferential usage or expansion of Vβ17-expressing clones has been observed in inflammatory conditions like nickel-induced contact dermatitis; thus it serves both functional and biomarker roles within immunology research and diagnostics[5][6].
Drugs or agents that interact with this molecule typically act by: Non-specific activation of large numbers of T cells through superantigen binding to the variable region, leading to massive cytokine release ("cytokine storm"). There are no approved therapeutic drugs that selectively modulate only the Vβ17 subfamily.
