Overview

T cell receptor beta variable 22-1 (TRBV22-1) is a gene segment that encodes one of the variable regions of the beta chain of the T cell receptor (TCR) complex. The TCR is a disulfide-linked membrane protein found on the surface of T lymphocytes (T cells), which recognizes antigenic peptides presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules[1][3]. The beta chain of the TCR is generated during T cell development through somatic recombination involving variable (V), diversity (D), and joining (J) gene segments[1][3]. TRBV22-1 is one of many variable (V) gene segments of the TCR beta locus and contributes to the diversity of antigen recognition. Some sources refer to this gene as a pseudogene, indicating that the segment is non-functional in some individuals and does not produce a protein product (hence, alternative names referring to it as a pseudogene)[2]. TCRs play essential roles in the adaptive immune system, enabling T cells to recognize and respond to a wide variety of pathogens[1][3]. Importantly, TRBV22-1 itself, like other individual TCR variable segments, is not considered a direct pharmacological or therapeutic target, nor is it commonly used as a biomarker or known to interact with drugs. Instead, the functional TCR complex as a whole is fundamental in immune cell signaling and antigen-specific immune activation[1][2][3].
