Overview

The T cell receptor beta variable region (TCR Vβ) refers to the segment of the T cell receptor (TCR) beta chain gene that encodes a highly diverse variable domain responsible for antigen recognition. The TCR is a heterodimeric transmembrane receptor composed of alpha and beta chains (most common form), both with variable (V) and constant (C) regions. The Vβ domain, generated by V(D)J recombination, directly contributes to the specificity of antigen binding via recognition of peptide fragments presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. There are multiple Vβ gene families in humans, and their expression patterns can be used to track clonal T cell populations in various diseases. Some bacterial superantigens interact with specific TCR Vβ regions, causing polyclonal T cell activation. Analyses of the TCR Vβ repertoire are used in both basic immunology and clinical diagnostics to assess T cell diversity, clonal expansions, and immune reconstitution [2][3][4][6][7].
