T cell receptor gamma joining 1 (TRGJ1) is a genetic segment within the T cell receptor gamma (TRG) locus. During T lymphocyte development, the TRGJ1 segment joins with a variable (V) segment to form the rearranged gamma chain transcript that encodes part of the gamma chain of the γδ T cell receptor. This V-J recombination is essential for generating the diverse antigen specificities needed for adaptive immunity. TRGJ1 does not encode a functional protein by itself but serves as a crucial element in the assembly of the TCRγ subunit. While γδ T cells and their receptors are being explored as targets in immunotherapy, TRGJ1 itself is not drug-targeted or used as a biomarker[3][5][7][9]. TRGJ1 is a “joining” gene, a short DNA sequence incorporated during TCR gene somatic recombination—a process critical to immune diversity, but not producing a standalone protein[3][5][7]. The whole γδ T cell receptor (TCRγδ), not individual joining segments like TRGJ1, is sometimes considered a therapeutic target in cancer and infectious disease immunotherapies[1][2]. TRGJ1 appears in scientific databases as a component of the T cell receptor gamma locus, with a precisely defined role in immune genetics[7][9].
