T cell receptor gamma variable 1 (TRGV1) represents a subgroup of the gamma chain variable gene family within the T cell receptor (TCR) complex, found at the TRG locus on chromosome 7p14 in humans. It is designated a pseudogene because of a structural defect, such as a splice site mutation, that prevents the generation of a functional TCR gamma chain. Unlike other gamma variable segments, TRGV1 does not contribute to antigen receptor diversity or immunological function in humans. In some higher primates (e.g., chimpanzees and gorillas), homologous genes may be functional, but in humans TRGV1's defective splice site is conserved across populations, rendering it a marker of human speciation rather than an active immune element. TRGV1 does not serve as a therapeutic target or have recognized disease relevance, and no drugs interact with it.
