Overview

The term "T cell subset balance" refers to the dynamic equilibrium among different T lymphocyte subpopulations—principally CD4^+^ helper T cells (including Th1, Th2, Th17, T regulatory cells), CD8^+^ cytotoxic T cells (including Tc1, Tc17), and unconventional T cells (such as γδ and NKT cells). Each subset has specialized functions, and their proportional distribution is regulated through cytokines, transcription factors, metabolic cues, and environmental signals. Disruption of T cell subset balance is implicated in a variety of pathological states, including autoimmunity, immune deficiency, cancer, and infectious disease[3][4][5][6]. This is not a molecule, gene, enzyme, transporter, or receptor and does not serve as a direct target for drugs, but represents a key immunological concept that underlies many therapeutic strategies, particularly in immuno-oncology and autoimmune disease[3][5][8].
