T-cell surface glycoprotein CD1e (CD1E) is a transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the CD1 family, structurally related to MHC class I proteins, but specialized for the presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens rather than peptides. CD1E localizes predominantly in intracellular compartments, including Golgi, endosomes, and lysosomes, and is processed into a soluble form required for the intracellular processing and presentation of certain glycolipids. Unlike other CD1 molecules, CD1e does not present antigens directly to T cells on the cell surface but instead assists in generating antigenic glycolipid intermediates that can be loaded onto other CD1 family members for presentation. CD1E thus plays a key role in the adaptive immune response to self and microbial lipid antigens and may be implicated in immune-related diseases and cancer[1][2][6][7].
