The T-cell surface glycoprotein CD3 epsilon chain (CD3E) is an essential component of the T cell receptor (TCR)-CD3 complex found on the surface of T lymphocytes. Its primary role is to couple antigen recognition by the TCR to intracellular signal transduction pathways that activate immune responses. CD3E also plays a crucial role in proper development and maturation of functional T cells within the thymus. Mutations or defects in CD3E cause severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Variants have also been associated with increased susceptibility to autoimmune diseases such as type I diabetes mellitus.
