The T helper 1 (Th1) cell-mediated immune response is a critical arm of the adaptive immune system, primarily responsible for defending against intracellular pathogens such as viruses, certain bacteria (notably Mycobacteria), and protozoa. Th1 cells are a subset of CD4+ T helper cells that orchestrate cellular immunity by activating other immune cells through direct contact and cytokine secretion. Key functions include the activation of macrophages, promotion of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses, induction of B cell class switching to produce IgG2a antibodies, and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Dysregulation of this response can lead to immunopathology, including autoimmunity and hypersensitivity reactions.
