Overview

T helper 17 (Th17) cell activation refers to the process by which naive CD4+ T cells differentiate into Th17 cells and become functionally active. Th17 cells are a distinct subset of pro-inflammatory T helper lymphocytes, primarily defined by their production of interleukin-17A (IL-17A), but also IL-17F, IL-21, and IL-22. These cells play crucial roles in host defense against extracellular pathogens at mucosal and epithelial barriers, as well as in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The differentiation from naive CD4+ T cell to activated Th17 cell involves antigen presentation, and the presence of specific cytokines determines lineage commitment, notably TGFβ combined with IL‑6 or IL‑21, and later IL-23 for maintenance.
