Overview
T helper 17 (Th17) cells are a distinct subset of CD4+ T lymphocytes characterized by their production of interleukin-17 (IL-17) family cytokines, primarily IL-17A and IL-17F. Th17 cells play a central role in mediating inflammation, particularly at mucosal and epithelial barriers, where they contribute to host defense against extracellular bacteria and fungi. However, dysregulation or aberrant activation of Th17 responses is implicated in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
