The T helper cell type 1 (Th1) pathway refers to the differentiation and function of a subset of CD4+ T helper cells that orchestrate cell-mediated immune responses, particularly against intracellular pathogens such as viruses, certain bacteria, and protozoa. Th1 cells are distinguished by their cytokine profile, transcriptional regulation, surface markers, and effector functions. They are essential for defense against intracellular pathogens but can contribute to tissue damage if overactivated or dysregulated. Key cytokines involved are IL-12, IFNγ, and TNFα. The master regulator for Th1 differentiation is T-bet.
