Overview

T helper cell type 2 cytokines are a group of signaling proteins secreted by differentiated CD4+ T cells known as Th2 cells. The principal members include interleukin‑4 (IL‑4), IL‑5, IL‑9, IL‑10, IL‑13, and sometimes IL‑25. These molecules orchestrate the immune response against extracellular parasites such as helminths and play a central role in the development of allergic reactions by promoting antibody production—especially IgE—and activating eosinophils and basophils[1][4][5]. Overproduction or dysregulation of these cytokines is implicated in asthma, allergies, certain autoimmune conditions, and tissue fibrosis[1][2]. While individual Th2-associated interleukins can be considered therapeutic targets (e.g., anti–IL–5 therapies for asthma), the collective term "T helper cell type 2 cytokines" refers to a functional group rather than a single molecular target.
