T helper cell type 2 cytokine response

Molecular classification
Cytokine network, Immune response pathway
01

Overview

The T helper cell type 2 (Th2) cytokine response refers to the immune activities orchestrated by Th2 cells, a specialized subset of CD4+ T helper lymphocytes. Th2 cells are central to the humoral (antibody-mediated) immune response, particularly against extracellular parasites such as helminths, and play a pivotal role in allergic diseases including asthma and atopic dermatitis. Key cytokines produced include IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-9, IL-10, IL-13 and IL-17E/Interleukin-25. These cytokines collectively drive antibody production, eosinophil activation, mucus secretion, and tissue responses associated with allergy and parasite defense. Overactivation or dysregulation is implicated in allergic diseases and some autoimmune conditions. Therapeutic targeting of key components in the Th2 pathway—such as blocking IL–4Rα or anti–IgE therapies—is an established strategy for treating severe allergic diseases like asthma.
