Overview

T helper type 17 cells (Th17) are a distinct subset of CD4+ T helper lymphocytes characterized by their production of interleukin-17 (IL-17), particularly IL-17A and IL-17F. Th17 cells are pro-inflammatory and play a crucial role in host defense against extracellular pathogens, especially at mucosal and epithelial barriers. They are developmentally distinct from the classical Th1 and Th2 lineages, with unique differentiation pathways and effector functions. Dysregulation of Th17 cells can lead to tissue-damaging inflammation seen in many autoimmune/inflammatory disorders.
