Overview

T helper type 17 (Th17) cell response induction refers to the process by which naive CD4+ T cells differentiate into Th17 cells, a distinct subset of pro-inflammatory T helper lymphocytes. Th17 cells are characterized primarily by their production of interleukin-17A (IL-17A), as well as other cytokines such as IL-17F, IL-21, and IL-22. The induction and function of Th17 cells play critical roles in host defense against extracellular pathogens—especially at mucosal and epithelial barriers—and are also implicated in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The induction of a Th17 response involves antigen recognition by naive CD4+ T cells, followed by differentiation under specific cytokine conditions (TGFβ + IL-6 or IL-21 for initiation, IL-23 for maintenance). STAT3 signaling is central to this process.
