Overview

T helper type 2 cells (Th2 cells) are a specialized subset of CD4+ T lymphocytes that play a central role in orchestrating the humoral, or antibody-mediated, immune response. They are particularly important for defense against extracellular parasites, bacteria, allergens, and toxins. Th2 cells activate and maintain humoral immunity by stimulating B cell maturation and antibody production. They secrete signature cytokines including IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-9, and IL-13, promoting IgE class-switching and recruiting/activating eosinophils/basophils. While beneficial in anti-helminth immunity, overactivation can lead to allergic diseases like asthma.
