Target intelligence / Profile preview
T helper type 2 cells (Th2 cells) are a specialized subset of CD4+ T lymphocytes that play a central role in orchestrating the humoral immune response. They are characterized by their secretion of cytokines such as interleukin‐4 (IL‐4), IL‐5, and IL‐13. These cytokines promote B-cell differentiation and class-switching to immunoglobulin E (IgE), recruit and activate eosinophils, induce mucus production from epithelial tissues, and counteract pro-inflammatory responses mediated by Th1 cells. The induction or dominance of a Th2 response is associated with protection against extracellular parasites but also underlies the pathogenesis of allergic diseases such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, food allergies, and certain autoimmune conditions. Therapeutic strategies targeting key cytokines produced by Th2 cells—such as anti–IL‑4/13 or anti–IL‑5 antibodies—are used in treating severe asthma and other allergic disorders. However, "Immune system modulation via induction of Th2 response" is not itself a molecule or receptor but rather describes an immunological process; thus it is not considered a canonical therapeutic target like an enzyme or receptor would be.[1][2][3][5]
Inhibition of IL‑4/IL‑13 signaling to reduce Th2-mediated inflammation[3][5]; Blockade of IL‑5 to decrease eosinophil activity[3][5]
