Overview

The Th2 cell immune response is a coordinated set of immune activities driven by T helper type 2 (Th2) lymphocytes, a subset of CD4+ T cells. Th2 cells are defined by their production of type 2 cytokines—principally IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13—which promote humoral immunity (antibody production), eosinophil activation, tissue repair, and defense against extracellular parasites such as helminths[1][2][3][4][7][8][9]. These cells also play a central role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. Pathogenic subtypes (Tpath2 cells) with heightened IL-5 production and responsiveness to IL-33 have been implicated in chronic allergic inflammation and fibrosis[4]. Th2 responses oppose Th1-mediated cellular immunity and drive IgE-class switching in B cells. Excessive or uncontrolled Th2 activation can result in allergy, tissue remodeling, or fibrotic disease, making this immune process a therapeutic focus for various monoclonal antibody treatments targeting Th2 cytokines or their receptors.
