Overview

T helper type 2 (Th2) cell response modulation refers to the regulation of the differentiation, activation, and effector functions of Th2 cells—a subset of CD4+ T helper lymphocytes. Th2 cells are central to orchestrating humoral immunity, particularly against extracellular parasites and in allergic responses. Modulating this response is crucial for controlling diseases such as allergies, asthma, autoimmune disorders, and certain infections. Th2 cells mediate antibody-driven immune responses by producing cytokines including IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-9, IL-13, and IL-25. These cytokines stimulate B cell class-switching to IgE (important in allergy), activate eosinophils and basophils (key for parasite defense), induce mucus production and airway hyper-responsiveness. Overactivation or dysregulation can lead to allergic diseases like asthma or atopic dermatitis; underactivity may impair defense against helminths.
