Overview

T-type calcium channels (Cav3.x) are a family of low voltage-activated, voltage-gated calcium channels. They are characterized by their ability to open at relatively negative membrane potentials, rapid activation and inactivation kinetics, and small single-channel conductance. They play critical roles in pacemaking activity, neuronal excitability, smooth muscle contraction, and hormone secretion. Alterations in T-type channel function have been linked to epilepsy and neuropathic pain, making them therapeutic targets.
