Overview

The T-type calcium channel protein subunit alpha-1G (CACNA1G), also known as Cav3.1, is a voltage-dependent, low-voltage activated (LVA) calcium channel subunit that forms the pore of the T-type calcium channels. It is highly expressed in the brain, heart, kidney and lung. It is crucial for pacemaking activity in central neurons and cardiac nodal cells and is involved in neuronal oscillations important for sleep rhythms and absence seizures. Dysfunction or altered expression of CACNA1G/Cav3.1 has been implicated in absence epilepsy/absence seizures, sleep disorders involving thalamocortical dysrhythmias, and cardiac arrhythmias. Blockade of this channel subtype is an established therapeutic strategy against absence epilepsy.
