Overview

Tissue T1 relaxation time is a physical parameter representing the time it takes for the net magnetization of hydrogen protons in tissue to recover to 63% of its original longitudinal value after excitation by a radiofrequency pulse. It is determined by molecular interactions, water and fat content, and the presence of paramagnetic substances within tissue in an MRI scan. Values vary by tissue type, pathology, and MRI field strength, and accurate measurements are vital for optimal imaging protocols and interpretation. T1 relaxation is not independent of T2 relaxation; both contribute to MRI signal characteristics, but T1 is generally longer than T2. Changes in T1 can be used as imaging biomarkers in various diseases, especially in neuroscience and oncology.
