It acts as a regulator of cell proliferation and migration via G protein-coupled receptors, particularly S1PR2 and FPR2. FAM19A5 plays a protective role in the cardiovascular system by inhibiting vascular smooth muscle cell activation and neointima formation. In the nervous system, it promotes neuronal differentiation and is implicated in neurological diseases like Alzheimer's disease. Lower serum levels are observed in obese individuals, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for metabolic disorders and cardiovascular risk.
