Overview

TANK antisense RNA 1 (TANK-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed in the antisense direction relative to the TANK gene locus. Antisense lncRNAs like TANK-AS1 play a role in regulating the expression of overlapping or neighboring protein-coding genes through a variety of cis- and trans-acting regulatory mechanisms, including modulation of chromatin structure, recruitment of epigenetic modifiers, formation of RNA:RNA duplexes, and transcriptional interference. These RNAs are part of a broad class called natural antisense transcripts (NATs), which are pervasive in the human genome and contribute to the fine-tuning of gene expression, with emerging roles in development, cancer, and potentially other diseases[1][2][3]. There is currently insufficient evidence to classify TANK-AS1 as a direct therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or ion channel), nor are any clinically approved drugs known to act directly on it.
