Taste receptor, type 2, member 12, pseudogene (TAS2R12P) is a human genomic locus derived from a once-functional bitter taste receptor gene, part of the TAS2R family, but rendered non-functional due to mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons[2]. TAS2R family receptors are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) found in taste bud cells, responsible for the recognition of bitter compounds and initiation of taste signaling pathways[1]. Members of this family have diversified in primates and other vertebrates; pseudogenization (loss of coding function) is common, reflecting evolutionary changes in taste receptor repertoires related to dietary adaptations[1][2]. In humans, the TAS2R gene family includes both functional genes and at least 11 pseudogenes, such as TAS2R12P[2]. While some pseudogenes in this family may retain regulatory or evolutionary significance, TAS2R12P does not encode an active protein and has no known physiological, pathological, or therapeutic role[2][3].
