Taste receptor type 2 member 15 pseudogene (TAS2R15P) is a pseudogene derived from the TAS2R gene family, which normally encodes G protein-coupled bitter taste receptors involved in detecting bitter compounds to avoid ingestion of toxic substances. In humans, TAS2R15P does not produce a functional protein product due to loss-of-function genetic changes such as frameshifts or premature stop codons, and thus it cannot act as a receptor or be targeted by drugs. It is one of several TAS2R pseudogenes that exhibit population variation due to evolutionary processes, reflecting gene loss after ancestral functional activity. While some other TAS2R pseudogenes have been experimentally "rescued" in vitro to regain function, there is no evidence that TAS2R15P is functional or expressed as a receptor in any human tissue. Therefore, TAS2R15P is not classified as a therapeutic target.
