Taste receptor type 2 member 19 (TAS2R19) is a member of the bitter taste receptor family. It is a seven-transmembrane domain G protein-coupled receptor expressed primarily in sensory cells of the oral cavity. TAS2R19 is responsible for detecting bitter-tasting chemicals, many of which are plant metabolites and potential toxins. Activation of this receptor initiates a G protein-dependent signaling cascade that leads to calcium mobilization and neurotransmitter release, forming part of the body's defense against ingestion of harmful substances. While its main biological function is taste perception, variations or altered expression may be associated with disease states such as submandibular gland disorders
