TAS2R4 is a gustducin-coupled GPCR that functions as a bitter taste receptor, expressed in taste receptor cells. It detects bitter compounds in food. Upon ligand binding, TAS2R4 activates intracellular signaling cascades involving α-gustducin, phospholipase Cβ2, IP3 production, calcium release from intracellular stores, and ultimately neurotransmitter release. Emerging evidence suggests potential roles beyond gustation, including modulation of cell proliferation and migration. Genetic variations are linked to differences in bitter perception among populations. Its potential involvement outside gustation remains an area for further research.
