Taste receptor type 2 member 9 (TAS2R9) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, specifically involved in detecting bitter compounds in the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract. TAS2R9 is expressed in taste receptor cells clustered in the tongue and palate epithelia and signals via gustducin-mediated pathways, leading to increased intracellular calcium and depolarization, which transmits taste signals to the nervous system. Genetic variation in TAS2R9 can influence bitter taste perception and may have metabolic implications, such as influencing glucose homeostasis.
