TATA-box binding protein associated factor 9b (TAF9B) is a small subunit of the general transcription factor complex TFIID that is essential for transcription initiation by RNA polymerase II. TFIID consists of the TATA-binding protein (TBP) and several TBP-associated factors (TAFs), with TAF9B sharing sequence and functional similarities to TAF9 but possessing distinct roles in transcriptional activation and repression of specific gene sets. TAF9B may also participate in apoptotic processes and is essential for cell viability. Mutations or disruptions in TAF9B have been associated with syndromic X-linked intellectual disability (Siderius type). There are no approved drugs or therapeutic ligands known to directly target TAF9B.
